    And since I seem to be on a space roll, look at that beautiful thing that Virgin rolled out a few days ago. Sometime, hopefully soon, that hottie will take me on a ride. I could not be more excited for it.

Space Photo of the Day: On Novermber 14, 1984, NASA astronaut Dale Gardner strapped on his Manned Maneuvering Unit, stepped off the Space Shuttle Discovery, and proceeded to float fifty meters away, untethered, through the vast emptiness of space, to retrieve a wayward satellite which needed to be hauled back to earth.

    Space Chair - A Toshiba commercial in which an armchair is attached to a helium balloon and allowed to ascend into the stratosphere. It’s a bit disquieting, the ending especially; but very cool.

    feeling a little unloved and lonely. I hate how one text can change my entire view of everything. :/

    You know, I usually don’t like to have reblog conversations, but I’m in a strange mood today and you seem like a really sweet, lovely girl. So I just wanted to tell you that it seems pretty obvious to me that you’re anything but unloved, and that yeah, lonely happens sometimes, but at least it makes you appreciate company more, right?

  9. Le buffet

    C’est un large buffet sculpté ; le chêne sombre,
    Très vieux, a pris cet air si bon des vieilles gens ;
    Le buffet est ouvert, et verse dans son ombre
    Comme un flot de vin vieux, des parfums engageants ;

    Tout plein, c’est un fouillis de vieilles vieilleries,
    De linges odorants et jaunes, de chiffons
    De femmes ou d’enfants, de dentelles flétries,
    De fichus de grand-mère où sont peints des griffons ;

    - C’est là qu’on trouverait les médaillons, les mèches
    De cheveux blancs ou blonds, les portraits, les fleurs sèches
    Dont le parfum se mêle à des parfums de fruits.

    - O buffet du vieux temps, tu sais bien des histoires,
    Et tu voudrais conter tes contes, et tu bruis
    Quand s’ouvrent lentement tes grandes portes noires.

    Arthur Rimbaud.

  10. Sigh

    Some friends, two bottles of champagne and a whole bunch of cupcakes later, my roommate is officially an NYU graduate. Not technically, since she has to take finals, but still. Seeing her in the ridiculous purple toga and helping her put in bobby pins to hold the cap (what’s up with that anyway? You Americans have weird traditions) made the reality of her leaving very immediate. Same with my other early graduates, and with one friend who wasn’t going to graduate early but decided last minute to do it because he got a job working with Sotomayor - he’s moving to Washington D.C. in ten days.

    I knew what I was getting myself into when I applied to colleges abroad. I knew that, if they didn’t leave now, I’d be leaving them in May anyway. But May felt far away still… because of this, it doesn’t anymore.

    My roommate’s graduating right now! I left her as she was walking up on the stage, after helping her with her gown and everything. Then I rushed home to get things ready:
Flowers - ready. Ferrero Rochers (her favorite fancy chocolate) - ready. Cupcakes - currently in the oven. Champagne - currently in the fridge. Smiles will be available as soon as she walks in the door. All set!

    THE world is divided into “dog people” and “cat people”, each passionately believing that their preferred pet is superior. Until a decade ago, there was very little scientific evidence either camp could muster to support its claims. Then animal behaviourists became interested in dogs and unleashed a pack of ingenious experiments testing canine capabilities and cognition. Recently, researchers have started doing similar work with cats. Could it be time for that showdown?

    There are obvious pitfalls in trying to use science to resolve this perennial dispute. Every pet-owner knows their furry family member is special - a unique being with its own talents and foibles. Yet scientific research tends to look at species as a whole and deals in averages and trends when attempting to quantify their characteristics. Then there is the thorny issue of comparing two very different animals. Some might argue that the whole venture is doomed to failure, but here at New Scientist we like a challenge. So we have pitted cats against dogs in 11 categories. It’s a winner-take-all competition with “best in show” being awarded to the pet that prevails in the most categories. Let the fur fly…

    Interesting thing about New York. People here are experts at ignoring everything that surrounds them, other people especially. It’s as if they walked around with blinders on, like the kind used on horses. However, one girl is given a flower by a friend and puts it in her hair on a cold, dreary day, and suddenly everyone stares. Is it that people are yearning for a bit of spring? Or do they want the bit of simple happiness that that flower entails?
